The Stories of This Vagabond

Language Barrier

Hi Gram,
I woke up with my alarm this morning, then realized it was Wednesday when the group doesn’t walk. I was exhausted from being up late the last few nights, so I went back to sleep. I woke up around 7:15 just in time for FinTalks. We heard about cyber security and best practices from a retired expert, which gave me a few tasks to tackle so I could lock my stuff down better. After the zoom call, I made some breakfast then washed and separated my grapes.

After finishing a few other boring chores, I grabbed a Grab (Southeast Asia’s version of Uber) car over to meet up with a new friend, Patty. We walked along the beach and chatted, although the language barrier made it entertaining. She wants someone to practice her English with, but she’s just starting to learn. We had lunch at a cool seaside cafe and spent a lot of time with Google translate while I corrected her little things like when to say “he” or “him”. We had a lot of laughs and good food.

After lunch, we walked further along the beach then headed indoors to get some AC. Another couple hours of chatting with Google translate, listening to music in the background, and relaxing, then we each had to head home. We had a great time and plan to get together again soon. Back at the hotel, I cleaned my room a little, then headed next door for a light dinner of stir fried vegetables and rice. It must have been family owned, judging from all the little kids running around and giggling. They were quiet and well-behaved enough to be cute without annoying the patrons. I paid my bill and headed back up to the room, ready to watch a little YouTube and head to sleep.
